Comparative study on the overall energy performance between photovoltaic and Low-E insulated glass units

A novel semi-transparent building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) laminate was developed and introduced in this paper. It produced by cutting standard mono-crystalline silicon solar cells into small strips then making electrical connections between each strip before laminating the two layers of glass. The overall energy performance saving potential BIPV insulated glass unit (IGU) under real world conditions were identified through a side comparative study. Compared to reference IGU, IGU had lower heat gain coefficient (SHGC) but much higher U-factor. average HVAC electricity about 10% relative IGU. Daylighting measurement analysis carried out evaluate trade-offs associated with daylight, glare, lighting use. results indicated that is better than reducing discomfort glare. However, if most conservative viewpoint near window used for assessment, transmittance required bring levels below perceptible level. Lastly, net based on power, thermal daylighting performance. On average, saved 16.8% total use room. Further studies improvement conversion efficiency cells, optimal as well properties would make technology more energy-efficient affordable.
